Today's Giro di Sicilia ended in dramatic fashion. Supernutz was competing under an invitation earned by team legend Jackson Witherspoon...who announced his retirement shortly after his surprising podium finish.
Without him, Supernutz garnered a second place by Hal McLewandowski in the prologue, and then a fourth and second place by strong man Okpik in the resulting sprint stages. The final stage, on the road to Palermo, featured an early breakaway by Joachim Holtslag. He was too much of a threat for GC contention and with about 70 km to go Holtslag was caught. However, Supernutz's Victor Mayer and Ptbagooner's Amund Sandvik launched another breakaway. Holtslag latched onto this break, and with the peloton tired from trying to catch the initial break...it soon became apparent that these three would determine the stage.
Holtslag was a threat to win the GC, but needed time bonus on the win to ensure it. With 10 km to go, the cat and mouse began and the peloton edged ever closer. Sandvik launched first, but was countered by Holtslag while Mayer feigned weakness. Mayer then launched a late sprint, Sandvik cracked, and Holtslag wasn't able to beat Meyer to the line.
Meyer announced his immediate retirement from cycling, going out on a stage win to cap off a decent career. Holtslag managed to win the tour by one second. Capping off an exciting and dramatic Giro di Sicilia.
